UP, Bihar, Uttarakhand Evacuate Residents After Nepal Floods Kill 160
· India · Hindustan Times, Zee News, New York Times
Authorities in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Uttarakhand have initiated evacuations in border districts following flash floods in Nepal's Bhote Koshi River that resulted in at least 160 deaths. The disaster, which also left hundreds of tourists missing, threatens to raise water levels in Himalayan rivers flowing into India, including the Gandak, Ghaghara, Rapti, and Kosi. In Bihar, the government has ordered evacuations across five districts, with discharge at the Valmikinagar barrage expected to reach 300,000 cusecs by Thursday morning. All 36 gates of the Valmikinagar barrage have been opened in phases to manage the incoming water flow. Officials are monitoring gauge sites closely as water levels in the Narayani river remain below danger marks for now.
Why it matters
The surge in water levels poses a direct threat of displacement and infrastructure damage to thousands of residents living in low-lying areas across the three Indian states.
