UP fills all 10 Rajya Sabha seats unopposed: BJP 8, SP 2; Nathwani takes oath Oct 12
· India · Times of India, Hindustan Times, The Hindu
All 10 Rajya Sabha candidates from Uttar Pradesh were declared elected unopposed on Friday, the last day for withdrawal of nominations, including eight BJP candidates such as ministers Dharampal Singh and Prakash Pal, and SP's Ram Gopal Yadav and Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani. The BJP fielded an entirely new set of candidates, none of its outgoing members renominated, as the party prepares for the 2027 assembly elections. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav ended speculation of a third candidate, posting on X that the party's focus is now on the 403 assembly seats. Certificates were issued to nine candidates immediately, while Nathwani's certificate will be issued on October 12. The biennial elections were necessitated by the terms of 10 Rajya Sabha members ending on November 25.
Why it matters
The unopposed election fills Rajya Sabha vacancies ahead of the November 25 term expiry, ensuring upper house representation for BJP and SP as UP prepares for the 2027 assembly polls. The BJP's decision to field fresh faces signals a strategic shift to accommodate new political representatives ahead of the state elections.
