UP Minister Rajbhar Calls MLC Poll Results Mandate of Educated Voters

· India · India Today, Times of India

Uttar Pradesh minister Om Prakash Rajbhar stated the Legislative Council election results reflected the mandate of educated voters rather than the general public, after the Samajwadi Party defeated the BJP in the Varanasi and Lucknow Graduates' constituencies. The SP won five of the 11 seats, while the BJP secured six, including victories in the Varanasi and Lucknow Graduates' seats. Rajbhar noted that during Assembly elections, educated people do not turn up at polling booths, unlike the common voter who does. Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya acknowledged the SP won in places the BJP had expected to win, saying the party would introspect and work to improve performance in forthcoming elections. SP candidate Ashutosh Sinha won the Varanasi Graduates' constituency with 55,046 votes, defeating BJP candidate Kedar Nath Singh.

Why it matters

Rajbhar's comments highlight a perceived voting divide between educated and general voters in Uttar Pradesh, potentially influencing campaign strategies ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The MLC results may prompt parties to tailor outreach to different voter demographics.
