UP Rain Fury: Schools Shut in Lakhimpur Kheri, Cremations Shift to Rooftops in Varanasi

Incessant rain on Tuesday battered Uttar Pradesh, forcing the closure of all schools up to Class 8 in Lakhimpur Kheri and pushing the Ganga past its warning level in Varanasi. The Central Water Commission recorded the Ganga at 70.28 metres at 10 am, just above the 70.26-metre warning level and rising at 0.5 centimetres per hour, with the danger mark at 71.262 metres. In Varanasi, waterlogged lanes were navigated by boat, and cremations at the Manikarnika and Harishchandra ghats — normally riverside — were being carried out on rooftops and bylanes after the traditional sites flooded. In Lakhimpur Kheri, water seepage between Bhira and Palia stations forced North Eastern Railway to suspend around half a dozen trains on the Mailani-Nanpara section until further orders. Rising levels in the Mohana and Karnali rivers, which originate in Nepal, also raised concerns in border villages of Nighasan tehsil, including those near Dudhwa National Park.
