UP Targets 10,000 Go Mitra Volunteers to Engage Gen‑Z in Cow Protection

The Uttar Pradesh government is training 10,000 Go Mitras through the Go Seva Commission to sensitize Gen‑Z about cow protection and natural farming. Master trainers will first be trained and then will conduct village‑level campaigns to familiarise children and youth with indigenous breeds, cattle care, and the environmental and economic benefits of cows. The plan is part of a broader strategy to link cow shelters with rural livelihoods, women’s self‑help groups, green energy and employment. Uttar Pradesh currently operates more than 7,500 shelters housing over 12 lakh stray cattle, and the daily maintenance subsidy per animal has been raised from Rs 30 to Rs 50. Shelters are being fitted with CCTV and will be connected to local industries that produce cow dung‑based products such as logs, paint, vermicompost and incense sticks to create rural jobs. The initiative aims to curb crop damage caused by roaming cattle while generating extra income for farm households.
