UPI Completes Decade with 13,000-Fold Jump in Transaction Volume

India's Unified Payments Interface completed ten years of operations on August 25, 2026, marking a monumental decade of growth in digital payments. Annual transaction volume surged from 1.78 crore in fiscal 2016-17 to over 24,162 crore in 2025-26, representing a nearly 13,000-fold increase. During the same period, total transaction value climbed from ₹0.07 lakh crore to approximately ₹314 lakh crore, according to Finance Ministry data. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India under the regulatory oversight of the RBI, UPI has become a cornerstone of the country's digital public infrastructure. Institutional adoption expanded significantly as the number of live banks on the network grew from 44 in its first year to 703 by 2025-26.
