UPI Transaction Volume Surges To 24,162 Crore In Ten Years

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has grown from 1.78 crore annual transactions in its inaugural year of 2016-17 to 24,162 crore transactions in FY26. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the Reserve Bank of India, the platform now supports over 66 crore daily transactions. The total value handled by the system rose from Rs 0.07 lakh crore to approximately Rs 314 lakh crore over the same decade. The number of participating banks has expanded from 44 to 703, reflecting the platform's deep integration into India's retail payment ecosystem. In 2026, monthly volumes reached a record high of 2,366 crore transactions in July.
