UPSC Turns 100: Commission Pushes Exam Reforms to Assess Reasoning and Spontaneous Thinking

· India · Indian Express, NDTV

The Union Public Service Commission commenced its two-day centenary celebrations, titled 'Manthan', at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, marking 100 years of the institution's journey. UPSC chairman Ajay Kumar outlined the Commission's vision for its next phase through three guiding principles — trust, transparency and technology. Kumar stressed the need to assess candidates on reasoning, spontaneous thinking and judgment under ambiguity rather than their ability to reproduce predictable or coached answers. Prime Minister Modi will participate in the centenary celebrations on Thursday, where he is scheduled to release a commemorative coin, a stamp and a book titled '100 Landmark Judgements: Shaping the Policies of UPSC and Public Service Commissions in India'. The UPSC undertakes around 250 distinct recruitment processes every year across disciplines, reflecting the extensive planning involved in its recruitment calendar.

Why it matters

The proposed examination reforms directly impact millions of civil services aspirants by shifting the evaluation focus away from rote learning toward critical reasoning and practical judgment under ambiguity.
