Urban Body Elections Begin Peacefully Across Three Andhra Districts
· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times
Urban local body elections in Chittoor, Annamayya, and Sri Sathya Sai districts began peacefully on Sunday with varied voter turnout trends across the three regions. Chittoor witnessed a huge voter turnout, while Annamayya recorded a moderate response and Sri Sathya Sai saw a slow flow of voters during early hours. Elections in Sri Sathya Sai district cover six urban bodies including Hindupur, Dharmavaram, Kadiri, Puttaparthi, Penukonda, and Madakasira. Police have deployed more than 1,500 personnel in Chittoor district alone and 36,351 personnel statewide following earlier clashes during the nomination process in Punganur and Rayachoti. Annamayya district previously reported 31 election-related cases and 51 arrests between October 15 and 29, prompting heightened security measures.
Why it matters
The elections determine local municipal representation for over 900,000 voters across 13 urban bodies in Andhra Pradesh, where heavy police deployment aims to prevent a repeat of prior nomination-phase violence.
