US 30-Year Bond Yield Holds Above 5% in Worst Run Since 2006
· Business · Bloomberg, Economic Times
The yield on the US 30-year Treasury bond has closed above 5% on 55 days since the start of January, the most such closes in any year since 2006, according to Bloomberg-compiled data. The yield hit 5.34% in mid-August, its highest level since 2007 and just 10 basis points away from the highest in 22 years. As of Tuesday, the yield stood at 5.27%. Persistent pressure has come from a gaping US budget deficit, another wave of corporate issuance, and a potentially decisive Federal Reserve meeting expected in the weeks ahead.
Why it matters
Sustained 30-year yields above 5% raise borrowing costs across the US economy and ripple into global markets, including Indian debt and equity valuations, while a looming Fed meeting could reset the trajectory.
