US Ambassador's Kashmir Visit Sparks Diplomatic Spat With Pakistan
· India · Al Jazeera, Indian Express
Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the top US diplomat in Islamabad on Wednesday following remarks by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor regarding Kashmir. During his visit to Srinagar and Ladakh, Gor described Indian-administered Kashmir as an important part of India, prompting a strong demarche from Pakistan. This trip was the first standalone visit by a serving US ambassador to the territory since 2019. Gor also indicated that the US is reconsidering its travel advisory for the region, citing improved security conditions under the administration of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Pakistan rejected the characterisation of the territory, reiterating its stance that the region is a disputed area awaiting final resolution.
Why it matters
The incident complicates the US administration's efforts to balance its strategic partnership with India against its diplomatic engagement with Pakistan.
