US Approves $2.7 Billion Military Aid Package for Ukraine
· World · Times of India, The Hindu
The US State Department has approved a $2.68 billion military aid package to bolster Ukraine's air-defence capabilities amid ongoing Russian strikes. The announcement follows continued attacks across Ukraine, including incidents in Zhytomyr, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia that resulted in civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. Russia’s Defence Ministry reported intercepting hundreds of Ukrainian drones targeting Russian regions, Crimea, and the Black Sea. Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine has received a 3.3 billion-euro tranche from the European Union to further strengthen its defence sector. These developments occur as US-mediated negotiations to end the full-scale invasion remain stalled over territorial disputes.
Why it matters
The infusion of advanced air-defence equipment is intended to protect Ukrainian infrastructure and civilians from persistent Russian missile and drone attacks. This support, coupled with EU financial aid, is critical for Ukraine's ability to maintain its defensive posture as diplomatic efforts for a settlement remain deadlocked.
