Civil rights activists gathered on the National Mall in Washington on Friday to protest Republican redistricting and voting restrictions pushed by President Donald Trump ahead of November's US midterm elections. The Defend the Vote march took place exactly 63 years after Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his I Have a Dream speech during the 1963 March on Washington. Organised by civil rights leader Al Sharpton and led by King's son Martin Luther King III, the demonstration drew support from more than 90 civil rights, labour, faith, and community organisations. Prominent speakers included Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Organisers stated that voting rights face their most serious threat in decades following an April Supreme Court ruling that weakened protections under the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The demonstration also coincided with an ongoing legal battle over President Trump's executive order to tighten rules governing mail-in voting.
