US Commander Says Strait of Hormuz Shipping Lanes Cleared of Iranian Mines

· World · Bloomberg, News18, Hindustan Times

The top US commander for the Middle East said in a new video that American forces have cleared Iranian mines from shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. The declaration comes after Washington's allies expressed doubts about the mission's progress. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, with a significant share of the world's crude oil passing through it daily. India, which imports the majority of its crude oil requirements, depends heavily on this route for energy supplies.

Why it matters

Roughly 20% of global oil trade transits the Strait of Hormuz, and India sources most of its crude imports through this chokepoint. Reopening the shipping lanes eases immediate supply and price risks for Indian refiners and consumers, while signalling a US success against Iranian naval mining.
