Chinese artificial intelligence firms are bypassing US export restrictions by accessing advanced Nvidia computing power through data centers in Southeast Asia. Current US export controls focus strictly on the physical ownership of semiconductor hardware rather than remote cloud access. White House official Michael Kratsios accused Moonshot AI of using Nvidia GB300 chips via a facility in Thailand shortly after releasing a new model in July. Other Chinese companies including DeepSeek and Alibaba have also launched high-performing AI systems using overseas cloud providers. Lawmakers are currently discussing legislation to regulate remote cloud access, though significant hurdles remain.
