US Court Rules Google Will Not Have to Sell Ad Exchange in Antitrust Case
· Technology · Ars Technica, Engadget, Reuters
A US federal judge has ruled that Google is not required to sell its online advertising exchange, previously known as AdX, following the conclusion of a long-running antitrust trial. US District Judge Leonie Brinkema sided with the tech giant on the divestiture demand brought by the Department of Justice and a coalition of states, which argued Google rigged ad auctions. While the court found that Google illegally locked publishers into using its exchange, it rejected the government's push to break up the ad tech business. The specific penalties and business practice changes ordered by the court remain temporarily sealed for 14 days to allow for redaction requests.
Why it matters
The decision spares Google from a major structural breakup, setting a precedent for how federal courts handle antitrust remedies against Big Tech companies.
