US Green Card Approvals Plunge Sharply for Indian Tech Professionals

· World · Times of India, NDTV, Hindustan Times

The approval rate for the EB-1A visa category, meant for individuals with extraordinary ability, has dropped significantly in the first half of FY26. Indian applicants saw their approval rate fall to 35%, compared to 49.1% across the full FY25. Data from Boundless Immigration and USCIS shows that Indian applicants submitted 14,250 petitions in FY25 with 6,993 approvals, and 7,316 petitions in the first half of FY26 with 2,571 approvals and 1,131 denials. Technology professionals from India and China account for the largest volumes of EB-1A filings. The decline coincides with stricter skilled-worker immigration measures introduced by the Donald Trump administration.

Why it matters

The plunging approval rates restrict permanent residency pathways for skilled Indian tech workers and executives seeking to bypass long waiting periods in other visa categories.
