The White House has named India as one of more than 40 countries facilitating the illegal transshipment of Chinese goods to evade US tariffs. The report, titled 'The Great Transhipment Scam', identifies India alongside Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, and the European Union as top enablers. The US has been imposing tariffs on Chinese goods since 2018 under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 to address trade deficits and unfair practices. The report claims that Chinese exporters have increasingly routed products through third-party nations to bypass these levies. The US government recently added a 12.5% tariff on July 24, 2026, citing forced-labour compliance gaps.
