A U.S. Navy destroyer carrying about 300 sailors suffered a major engineering breakdown in the Pacific Ocean on July 24, leaving the vessel without power for four days. The USS Benfold experienced a generator failure that disrupted drinking water, meals, toilets, and air conditioning aboard the ship. The cruiser USS Robert Smalls supplied food to the disabled destroyer before it was towed to Subic Bay in the Philippines on July 28 for repairs. Navy spokesman Cmdr. Matthew Comer confirmed there were no crew injuries during the incident. The Benfold departed port on August 8 with all engineering and combat systems functioning normally.
