US Pledges Cooperation With Japan in Okinawa Murder Case
· World · Al Jazeera, Hindustan Times
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has promised full cooperation with Japanese authorities investigating the alleged murder of a local woman in Okinawa. Devin Jacob Ballard, a US Marine stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, was arrested on October 4 on suspicion of robbing and murdering 39-year-old Anna Yagi at a hotel in Naha. The killing has sparked public outrage in Japan and intensified long-standing criticisms regarding the heavy US military presence in the region. In response to the incident, US military personnel in Okinawa have been placed under a monthlong curfew and barred from consuming alcohol while undergoing mandatory discipline training. Rubio discussed the case and upcoming diplomatic meetings during a phone call with Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu.
Why it matters
The case revives bilateral tensions between Washington and Tokyo over the conduct of US troops stationed in Japan, which hosts the largest overseas contingent of American forces globally.
