US President Donald Trump Sued Over Canadian Tariffs
· World · BBC News, Al Jazeera
US President Donald Trump is facing a new legal challenge from the Liberty Justice Center over recent tariffs imposed on Canadian goods. The lawsuit was filed in New York on behalf of New Jersey-based food business Gellert Global Group, which imports Canadian cheese and is subject to a 50% levy. The White House enacted the 50% import tax on approximately $20 billion of Canadian goods after trade negotiations broke down in August. The legal group argues that the administration exceeded its authority under Section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act and failed to observe the required 30-day waiting period. The lawsuit asks the US Court of International Trade to declare the tariffs unlawful and order refunds for affected importers.
Why it matters
The legal challenge directly questions executive authority on trade policy and could force refunds for American businesses burdened by escalating cross-border duties.
