· World · India Today, NDTV, Gulf News

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed made history by winning a Senate seat from Michigan in the November 3 midterms, becoming America's first Muslim senator after defeating Republican Mike Rogers. El-Sayed is connected to Karnataka through his wife, Dr Sarah Jukaku, whose family traces its roots to the coastal town of Bhatkal in the Uttara Kannada district. Sarah is the granddaughter of JH Shamsuddin Jukaku, a prominent lawyer who served as deputy finance minister in the erstwhile Mysore State government during the 1950s. Shamsuddin was a pioneering figure from the Nawayath Muslim community who represented Honnavar in the Mysore Legislative Assembly and contributed to infrastructure development in Bhatkal. Local residents in Bhatkal credit him with bringing electricity and educational institutions to the region.
