US to Investigate Alleged Missile Strike on Iran Wedding
· World · BBC News, India Today
A United States missile strike has been alleged to have struck a wedding ceremony in Sirik, southern Iran, killing four people and injuring about 67. The Iranian Red Crescent Society said shrapnel from the missile caused the casualties, while Iran’s foreign ministry labelled it a war crime. Vice‑President J.D. Vance expressed scepticism over the report but confirmed a formal investigation would be pursued. US Central Command maintains the missile launch was directed at Iranian attempts to attack American forces and denied civilian targeting. The incident follows recent Iranian attacks on US bases in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. Video evidence shows a telecommunications tower 112 metres from the wedding house was destroyed on the same day.
Why it matters
The claim of civilian casualties from a US strike could intensify tensions between the United States and Iran, affecting regional security and potentially disrupting oil flows that India depends on.
