US Weighs Pulling 40,000 Troops From Europe Amid NATO Rifts

· World · India Today, Times of India

The Pentagon is considering a major reduction in the US military presence in Europe that could see between 25,000 and 40,000 service members withdrawn alongside aircraft and naval assets. The proposed cuts come as President Donald Trump criticizes NATO allies for failing to shoulder a larger share of the continent's defence burden. US European Command head General Alexus Grynkewich is scheduled to submit force requirements to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Friday, with a final recommendation due on November 6. If implemented, the drawdown would represent the largest reduction in the US military footprint in Europe since the post-Cold War cuts of the 1990s. The review arrives as Russia continues its war in Ukraine and European governments warn that Moscow is expanding military activities across the continent.

Why it matters

A significant US troop withdrawal could weaken European defence capabilities against ongoing Russian aggression and alter transatlantic security alliances. Lawmakers in Washington and European officials have raised concerns over the potential reduction in regional stability.
