USS Benfold Loses Power, Stripped of Toilets and Air‑Conditioning for Four Days

· World · Times of India, CBS News, The Independent

The USS Benfold, an Arleigh Burke‑class destroyer, lost power on 24 July 2026 after an engineering casualty involving its generators while operating in the South China Sea. The outage crippled toilets, galley, air‑conditioning, potable water supply and limited the ship’s independent manoeuvring. The Navy reported no injuries among the crew and said the exact cause remains under investigation. The ship was escorted to Subic Bay, Philippines, where repairs were finished on 8 August, allowing it to resume duty. During the four‑day stoppage, the cruiser USS Robert Smalls provided cooked meals and other vessels from the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group assisted with support services. This incident marks the second U.S. destroyer power‑failure in the Indo‑Pacific this year, following USS Higgins’ May outage.

Why it matters

The loss of basic life support systems and manoeuvring capability limited the USS Benfold’s operational readiness in a strategically contested region, stressing the importance of power reliability for naval vessels. The incident also highlighted the role of allied ships in providing immediate logistical support during crises, reinforcing joint operational cohesion in the Indo‑Pacific.
