Uttarakhand CM Dhami Slams Akhilesh Yadav Over 'Infiltrator' Remark

· India · Times of India, News18

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has strongly condemned Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav for using the term "ghuspaithiya" (infiltrator) in a remark targeting a person from the hill state. The comment appeared to be directed at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was born in Pauri Garhwal district when it was part of undivided Uttar Pradesh before Uttarakhand was carved out in 2000. Dhami accused Yadav of insulting the pride and struggles of Devbhoomi and invoked the 1994 Rampur Tiraha firing incident, during which Uttar Pradesh Police opened fire on statehood activists under Mulayam Singh Yadav's regime. Dhami also questioned whether the Congress party, the Samajwadi Party's political ally in Uttar Pradesh, supported Yadav's statement. Both states, governed by the BJP since 2017, are scheduled to hold assembly elections early next year.

Why it matters

The exchange sharpens political friction between regional parties and the ruling BJP ahead of upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
