Uttarakhand Installs State's First Glacial Lake Early-Warning System in Chamoli

Uttarakhand has begun installing its first early-warning system for a glacial lake at Vasundhara Tal in Chamoli district, shifting its strategy from merely mapping vulnerable lakes to real-time monitoring. Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan flagged off a scientific and technical team on Tuesday comprising experts from the Central Building Research Institute in Roorkee and the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology in Dehradun. The operation, running from September 29 to October 15, is supported by the State Disaster Response Force, the National Disaster Response Force, and the Indo Tibetan Border Police. The initiative aims to mitigate the risks posed by glacial lake outburst floods following recent disasters in the Himalayas, including a devastating glacial collapse in Nepal and the Dharali flash flood in Uttarkashi. The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority has been rolling out a comprehensive plan to study and monitor the state's high-altitude lakes.
