Uttarakhand Replaces Friday Off With Sunday for Madrasas Under New Framework

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu

The Uttarakhand government has replaced Friday with Sunday as the weekly holiday for madrasas across the state as part of a uniform education framework. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that the move aligns with the state's goal of establishing a uniform system for all educational institutions, following the introduction of the Uniform Civil Code. The statutory Madrasa Education Board has been abolished and replaced by the Uttarakhand State Authority for Minority Education, established under the Uttarakhand Minority Education Act, 2025. Minority Welfare Secretary Parag Madhukar Dhakate reported that out of 452 previously registered madrasas, more than 200 have closed while about 200 have affiliated with the Education Department. Under the updated regulations, minority institutions must secure recognition from USAME and affiliation with the Uttarakhand Board of School Education.

Why it matters

The restructuring shifts administrative oversight of minority religious schools to state education authorities, altering operating standards and holiday schedules for hundreds of institutions.
