· India · Indian Express

Researchers in Uttarakhand have successfully produced a female Badri calf using Ovum Pick-Up and In Vitro Fertilization (OPU-IVF) technology. The calf was born on September 11 after a Badri embryo was transferred into a Sahiwal recipient cow. This collaborative project involved the ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute in Karnal and GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in Pantnagar. The initiative, which began in 2023, aims to accelerate the conservation and genetic improvement of the indigenous Badri cattle breed. Experts state that this reproductive biotechnology allows for the rapid multiplication of elite germplasm.

Why it matters

This breakthrough provides a scalable method for conserving and improving the genetic quality of the indigenous Badri breed, which is vital for regional agricultural biodiversity in Uttarakhand.
