Vance Sends Letter to Iran, Proposing Talks as Trump Warns Gulf to Prepare
· World · Al Jazeera, NDTV
US Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei proposing a framework for negotiations and a possible US-Iran meeting, according to US media. Qatari mediators delivered the letter on Sunday, and the letter was "received well" by Iran, while Iran has not publicly commented. The outreach comes as Trump warned Gulf allies to prepare for a brief, high-intensity military campaign after the upcoming US midterm elections and hinted at another military operation against Iran. If Iran accepts, negotiations could take place as soon as next week in Qatar or Turkiye, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran continues to give diplomacy a chance. Rezaei is expected to officially respond to Vance’s letter on Thursday, according to the report.
Why it matters
The letter marks a narrow diplomatic window that could avert a new US strike on Iran, directly affecting oil market stability and the security of Gulf states that host major Indian oil imports. A resumption of talks also offers a chance to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, a critical chokepoint for India’s energy supplies.
