Vijay's TVK Increases Tally to 109, But Still Needs Congress Support

· India · India Today

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has increased its Assembly tally to 109 following bypoll victories in Dharapuram and Madurantakam. The two seats returned to the TVK fold after their former AIADMK legislators resigned and won under the TVK symbol. In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, 118 seats are required for a simple majority, leaving the ruling party nine seats short of that mark. Even if the TVK wins all five Assembly seats awaiting by-elections, its tally would rise to 114, keeping the minority government dependent on Congress. Congress, which holds five MLAs as a ruling coalition partner, remains crucial for the legislative stability of CM Vijay's administration.

Why it matters

Coalition management remains essential for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay as his minority government depends on Congress legislators to maintain legislative stability.
