Vijayan Seeks Withdrawal of Keralam Circular on College Seat Increases
· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu
Pinarayi Vijayan has urged the Keralam government to immediately withdraw a circular that allows autonomous aided and self-financing colleges to increase seats without prior approval. The CPI(M) veteran alleged that the decision was taken under pressure from private college managements and would lead to the commercialisation of education. He noted that a September 11 circular issued by the Higher Education Department had previously made prior government approval mandatory for introducing new courses and increasing seats. Vijayan contended that the relaxed norms bypass strict scrutiny and facilitate backdoor seat sales without regard for merit and reservation. The former Chief Minister questioned whose interests the government was protecting by granting concessions following meetings between college managements and the Higher Education Minister.
Why it matters
The controversy affects college admissions, merit quotas, and the regulation of private and aided higher education institutions across Keralam.
