Viking FK Advances to Champions League After 34-Year Title Wait
· Sports · BBC Sport
Norwegian club Viking FK has reached the Champions League group stage for the first time since the 2005–06 Uefa Cup. The Stavanger-based team, which ended a 34-year domestic title drought last year, recently secured a 3-3 draw against Bayern Munich. Joint head coaches Morten Jensen and Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim have led the club's revival since taking charge in 2021. The team is scheduled to face Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid, and Napoli in their upcoming European fixtures. Captain Zlatko Tripic, who joined the club in 2018, described the achievement as the culmination of a long-awaited goal for the side.
Why it matters
The club's return to elite European competition marks a significant milestone for the Stavanger-based team and its supporters, validating the unconventional joint-coaching model implemented in 2021.
