Vinicius Jr Banned For Four Matches After Red Card Against Villarreal
· Sports · BBC Sport, ESPN
Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr received a four-game ban following his red card in a 1-0 win against Villarreal last Saturday. The disciplinary committee of the Spanish football federation suspended the Brazilian winger for two matches for violent conduct after he pulled Nathan Saliba's hair off the ball, and added two more games for protesting to officials. The suspension rules him out for upcoming fixtures against Sevilla on 18 October, Barcelona on 25 October, Racing Santander on 1 November, and Valencia on 7 November. Vinicius came on as a substitute in the 52nd minute and initially thought he had scored Real's second goal before the referee reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor and disallowed it. Following the match, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho skipped the post-match news conference, while Vinicius later issued a public apology on social media.
Why it matters
The four-game suspension sidelines Vinicius Jr for key league fixtures, most notably El Clasico against Barcelona, depriving Real Madrid of a major attacking player during a crucial stretch of the season.
