· India · Indian Express, LiveMint
A viral video circulating online shows three unidentified men in a market draping Indian Railways bedsheets over their shoulders like shawls. The linen clearly bears the "WESTERN RAILWAY" stamp, indicating the items were taken from a train. Data obtained through RTI requests reveals that over 1.27 crore bedroll items, including bedsheets, blankets, and towels, were reported stolen from Indian Railways between January 2022 and May 2026. These thefts have resulted in financial losses exceeding Rs 104.51 crore for the national transporter. The exact location where the video was recorded remains unknown.
Why it matters
The persistent theft of railway property imposes a significant financial burden on the public exchequer and diminishes the quality of services available to millions of daily passengers.
