Visakhapatnam Espionage Case Highlights Online Honey Trap Vulnerabilities

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

Andhra Pradesh's Counter Intelligence Cell has questioned 13 Indian Navy personnel and identified 18 suspects in a honey-trap espionage racket involving sensitive maritime intelligence sharing with Pakistani Intelligence Operatives. Authorities arrested Navy sailor Pradeep Mukherjee attached to the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam along with contractual driver Annam Sai Varaprasad. The case echoes Operation Dolphin's Nose from December 2019, which led to fifteen arrests for similar espionage charges in the same command. In a separate incident in May, Delhi Police arrested a serving Indian Air Force Wing Commander for allegedly sharing classified defence documents with a PIO via social media. Investigators continue to examine the extent of compromised naval assets and installations across these active operations.

Why it matters

The string of honey-trap cases exposes persistent security vulnerabilities within India's critical defence installations, prompting tighter scrutiny of online interactions among service personnel.
