Vithya Ramraj has set a new Indian national record in the women's 400m hurdles, clocking 54.75 seconds to win bronze at the Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya. This performance surpasses the 55.42-second mark set by PT Usha at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Ramraj had previously equaled Usha's record in 2023 but achieved the outright milestone during this latest competition. She also secured a second medal in Nagoya as part of India's mixed 4x400m relay team.
Why it matters
This achievement marks the end of one of the longest-standing records in Indian athletics, establishing Ramraj as the first Indian woman to run the event in under 55 seconds.
