Volantis Raises $88 Million in Venture Capital for AI Chip Tech
· Technology · Economic Times, Reuters
San Francisco-based semiconductor startup Volantis has raised $88 million in venture capital to develop a technology that connects AI computing chips and memory chips using beams of laser light. The startup is tapping vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, or VCSELs, which already power facial recognition features in many Apple devices. This approach aims to eliminate the reach limits of tiny electrical wires and pack 220 high-bandwidth memory chips around a graphics processing unit, compared to the current limit of eight. Volantis plans to deliver a chip next year that would speed up tasks like AI coding while avoiding supply chain bottlenecks. Tapa Ghosh serves as the CEO and co-founder of the company.
Why it matters
The startup's laser-based technology addresses a major hardware bottleneck for AI chips built by Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices, potentially speeding up artificial intelligence processing and easing supply chain constraints.
