Voting begins for 5 bypolls across Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
· India · India Today, Indian Express
Voting commenced at 7 am on Tuesday for bypolls across five constituencies in four states and one Union Territory. In Tamil Nadu, bypolls are underway in the Madurantakam (SC) and Dharapuram (SC) Assembly seats, viewed as an early test for Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. In West Bengal, the high-profile Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly constituencies are polling, necessitated after TMC leader Suvendu Adhikari vacated Nandigram following his Assembly victory. In Assam, voting is in progress for the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat, where a triangular contest is expected between the BJP, Congress and AIUDF. In Puducherry, the Thattanchavady bypoll tests the popularity of the four-month-old NDA government led by N Rangasamy. A total of 71 companies of central security forces have been deployed, primarily in West Bengal, to ensure tight security arrangements.
Why it matters
The byelections serve as an early political test for key regional players: the Vijay-led TVK in Tamil Nadu, the BJP in West Bengal after its May assembly win, and the NDA government in Puducherry, while the Nagaon LS seat gauges voter response to the Assam government's governance.
