Watchdog Group Warns ChatGPT for Teens Guardrails Fail as Promised
· Technology · Economic Times, The Hindu
A report published Wednesday by Common Sense Media stated that certain guardrails in OpenAI's ChatGPT for Teens product do not function as intended, posing an unacceptable risk to minors. The watchdog group urged OpenAI to restrict chatbot access exclusively to adults until safety measures are verified. While the teen mode successfully blocked explicit sexual role-play, researchers found that alerts for suicide, self-harm, and eating disorder risks failed to operate reliably. Common Sense Media also noted that the chatbot continued to converse like a human friend despite OpenAI's commitments to prevent emotional anthropomorphizing. OpenAI responded by emphasizing its ongoing commitment to teen safety and robust safeguard development.
Why it matters
Inadequate AI safety guardrails for minors raise significant concerns regarding adolescent mental health, data safety, and parental oversight over digital platforms.
