Wenger's Daylight Offside Trial Unlikely to Be Extended After Ifab Panel Review

· Sports · BBC Sport

Arsene Wenger's "daylight" offside trial is unlikely to be extended after failing to gain support at the International Football Association Board assessment panels on Tuesday. The trial, which ruled a player onside if any part of the body was level with the second-last opponent, operated in the Canadian Premier League throughout the year across 112 matches. Technical panels were informed that the trial resulted in a 54% reduction in offside decisions and 13 additional goals, but also caused the defensive line to retreat three metres. The Canadian Premier League limited the trial's overall impact by using Football Video Support, an alternative to VAR allowing coaches two challenges per game. Panels also discussed a penalty shootout coin toss change and evaluated the goalkeeper injury trial currently used in English football.

Why it matters

Football lawmakers are evaluating experimental law changes for the 2027-28 season, and the rejection of the daylight offside trial means standard offside rules will likely remain unchanged globally.
