· India · Indian Express, The Hindu, India Today
The West Bengal government has ordered the closure of 252 madrasas and issued showcause notices to 100 others following a three-month state-wide survey. Minority Affairs and Madrasa Education Minister Kshudiram Tudu stated that the action targets institutions operating without government approval or proper authorization. The survey covered 22 districts and Kolkata, identifying 2,396 madrasas functioning without official board permission out of a total of 4,528 institutions assessed. Malda district, which shares a border with Bangladesh, has the highest number of closures at 45, followed by Uttar Dinajpur, South 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, and Nadia. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya supported the move, labeling the closed institutions as anti-national hubs.
Why it matters
The closure affects thousands of students and staff and marks a significant shift in the state's regulation of religious educational institutions.
