West Bengal Joins UDAN Scheme with Pact for Four New Airports

· India · Indian Express, LiveMint

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday to establish four new airports in the state under the UDAN scheme. The airports will be located at Chharra in Purulia, Balurghat, Hasimara, and Kalaikunda. Adhikari blamed the previous Trinamool Congress government for delaying the project by refusing to provide land despite central government requests. He stated that land had become the main obstacle to aviation infrastructure development under the former administration. The state government will provide land and basic infrastructure, while the Centre and Airports Authority of India will oversee development. The new airports are expected to reduce pressure on Kolkata airport and improve air connectivity between state districts and other parts of the country.

Why it matters

The agreement will improve regional air connectivity in West Bengal, particularly benefiting residents of Purulia, Balurghat, Hasimara, and Kalaikunda by providing direct flight access to other parts of India. It is also expected to boost trade and economic activity in the state by easing congestion at Kolkata airport and supporting regional development.
