What after police leave? Fear grips ‘purified’ Christians in Bengal village

· India · Indian Express, The Independent

Four Christian families in a Paschim Medinipur village in West Bengal are living in fear following an alleged three-day assault and "purification" ritual between October 18 and 20. Villagers reportedly forced a 40-year-old woman to undergo a "purification" ritual by pouring water over her and making her chew bel and tulsi leaves. The Christian families claim they have been ostracised and continue to receive threats, despite a police picket being set up in the village. An FIR has been registered at Chandrakona Police Station under sections including robbery, attempt to murder, criminal intimidation, and outraging the modesty of a woman. No arrests have been made in connection with the alleged assault, which villagers deny, while questioning the families' conversion to Christianity three years ago.

Why it matters

This incident highlights ongoing tensions and alleged persecution faced by religious minorities in parts of India, raising concerns about safety and communal harmony. The lack of arrests despite an FIR and police presence could further erode trust in law enforcement among vulnerable communities.
