Why FSSAI Calls Non-Dairy Paneer Analogue Paneer Instead Of Fake Paneer
· India · Hindustan Times, Times of India
Non-dairy paneer is termed "analogue paneer" rather than "fake paneer" because FSSAI regulations define analogue products as items where non-dairy constituents replace milk components while organoleptically or functionally resembling the original product. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India proposed amendments and a nationwide ban on manufacturing and selling non-dairy analogue products marketed under dairy terms to prevent consumer deception. Under these rules, genuine paneer must meet prescribed dairy standards, whereas products made with vegetable fats or oils cannot use dairy nomenclature on their labels. Labelling such items as paneer analogues clearly communicates to buyers that the product uses non-dairy substitutes rather than standard milk solids.
Why it matters
This regulatory distinction protects consumers from purchasing plant-based substitutes under the assumption they are buying pure dairy paneer, while providing manufacturers with a legally compliant labelling standard.
