Why Is Spurs Striker Richarlison Stuck Playing For Under-21s?
· Sports · BBC Sport
Less than four years after representing Brazil at the 2022 World Cup, Richarlison's downward spiral at Tottenham Hotspur was laid bare as he scored for the under-21s against Cheltenham Town in the EFL Trophy. The 29-year-old forward, who cost Spurs £60m from Everton, was making only his second appearance of the season after being left out of manager Roberto de Zerbi's 25-man Premier League squad. A proposed summer move back to Everton fell through on transfer deadline day, followed by a failed transfer to Brazilian side Vasco da Gama due to personal terms. With just three goals, Tottenham are the top-flight's lowest scorers this season and second-bottom in the table. De Zerbi stated that the decision to omit Richarlison followed the player's expressed desire to leave at the start of pre-season.
Why it matters
The exclusion of last season's 12-goal leading scorer leaves Tottenham short of attacking options as the club struggles with a goal crisis and sits near the bottom of the Premier League table.
