Why Nobel Physicist Francis Halzen Built an Antarctic Ice Observatory

· World · Times of India, Indian Express

Belgian particle physicist Prof Francis Halzen has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 2026 for establishing the IceCube neutrino observatory at the South Pole. The facility detects neutrinos, which are elusive subatomic particles carrying uncorrupted information from deep space because they travel unaffected by magnetic fields. Halzen first proposed capturing these ghost particles in 1988 by placing thousands of basketball-sized light sensors within a cubic kilometre of clear Antarctic ice. The location was chosen due to its extreme optical clarity, geological stability, and absence of seismic interference. The observatory began operating in 2011 and successfully recorded the first detection of high-energy extraterrestrial neutrinos in 2013.

Why it matters

The IceCube observatory enables scientists to trace high-energy cosmic particles back to their distant astrophysical sources, opening a new window into high-energy astrophysics.
