WMO Warns El Niño Will Persist Until Early 2027

· World · India Today, France 24, Indian Express

The World Meteorological Organisation has issued a forecast indicating a 100 percent probability that the current El Niño event will persist through February 2027. Unusually warm ocean conditions across the tropical Pacific have strengthened the climate pattern, with subsurface temperatures exceeding average readings by more than 8°C in July and early August. The Nino 3.4 monitoring region registered temperatures 1.5°C above average between May and July 2026, reaching 2°C above average in July and climbing further in subsequent weeks. Experts predict the phenomenon will reach peak intensity toward the end of 2026, bringing prolonged extreme-weather risks globally. The WMO update, released on September 3, marks the first time the organization has expressed absolute certainty regarding the longevity of an El Niño cycle.

Why it matters

A multi-year El Niño cycle threatens agricultural yields, water reserves, and weather stability across vulnerable regions worldwide.
