WTA Announces Equal Prize Money at All Elite Events From 2025
· Sports · BBC Sport, Sportstar
The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has announced that men and women will receive equal prize money at all combined WTA 1000 events starting from 2025. These tournaments are the highest level of competition outside the Grand Slams. Events in Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, and Beijing already met this commitment, and the Italian Open, Canadian Open, and Cincinnati Open will now follow suit. In 2023, the Italian Open organisers pledged equal prize money from 2025 but failed to implement it, with men receiving £7.3m and women £6.3m. The WTA also revealed calendar adjustments to reduce player commitments and increase flexibility.
Why it matters
This decision marks a significant step toward gender equality in professional tennis, ensuring female athletes receive equal financial rewards and competitive opportunities.
