A steam-powered tugboat known as the Slovenian has re-emerged from the Sava River near Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, due to record-low water levels caused by extreme heat. Built in 1913 in Budapest, the 54-metre vessel served as a cargo tug before being transferred to Yugoslavia as war reparations. During World War II, the boat was used by anti-fascist forces to transport wounded fighters until it struck a German mine and sank in April 1945. While parts of the wreck have been visible in the past, local historians report that the current drought has exposed more of the hull than ever before. The receding waters across Europe have simultaneously disrupted power generation, shipping, and agriculture in several countries.
